Founder and President, AM-Tutoring, LLC

Resume

Biography

My entire teaching career has focused on providing individualized academic support tailored to each student’s unique needs.  In fact, I worked one-on-one with students even before I officially became a teacher.  After growing up just outside of Boston, I came to Pennsylvania to attend Elizabethtown College, where I earned a degree in social work.  Working with special needs students as a social worker led me to pursue Pennsylvania state certification through a master’s degree equivalency program at Millersville University.  In 1998, I started working as a special education teacher at Strath Haven Middle School in Wallingford.  It did not take long for me to realize I loved helping students in a one-on-one setting and had a passion for middle school students.

I expanded my work with special needs students when I began teaching English language learners, first at The American School in Switzerland in Lugano and then at Seoul International School.  I returned to working with learning disabled students at Tredyffrin-Easttown Middle School, but at the same time began providing one-on-one academic counseling outside of the classroom.  Not only did I help students develop strategies for overcoming problems in particular content area assignments, but I also worked on improving students’ organizational and writing skills.  After I left teaching to spend more time with family, I found myself helping more and more students on an individualized basis.

As the next phase of this process, I founded AM-Tutoring in September 2014 to expand the reach of students I could help.  And that’s just what happened.  AM-Tutoring has tripled the number of students currently served.  As well, the roster of available tutors has increased exponentially, and we now offer services to all grade levels elementary through high school across almost all subject areas.  Despite all this growth, AM-Tutoring still maintains its core commitment to students: to provide individualized and comprehensive academic support that addresses each student’s unique learning styles and specific cognitive and emotional needs.

But, even with all the students I help, I still make sure to reserve special time for my three precious children, husband, dog, and daily exercise.

Why I teach?

As a younger girl, I did not always love the academic aspect of school, but could not get enough of the social parts.  I also really appreciated the teachers who knew how to make learning fun! They knew how to challenge me while making me laugh.  Sometimes it felt like they knew me better than I knew myself.  They also had a focus on life-long learning by incorporating all kinds of important life skills into their lessons.  In the spirit of these inspiring educators, I strive to have my students remember me as not only a content area instructor, but also one who guided them in how to reach their full potential in all aspects of their life, including beyond the classroom.

  • I have lived on three different continents.
  • I have travelled to over fifty different countries.
  • I ran a marathon with a fractured tibia and two broken toes.

Math, Science, English and French Specialist

Biography

My name is Alex, and I’m currently a Master’s student in Microbiology & Immunology at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. While I’ve been in Montreal for the last five years, I still call Wayne, PA home. I attended Radnor High School, where I played baseball and was part of the Model UN Team. Additionally, I am fluent in French and can also teach this subject!

Why I teach?

I teach because I’ve been in those shoes—not too long ago, actually—facing tough assignments, feeling stuck, and sometimes just needing someone to break things down in a way that makes sense. Being a recent university graduate, I know how helpful it can be to have someone who’s been through it and can share tips, shortcuts, and a bit of encouragement. I want my students to feel like they have a guide who gets it, someone who’s there to celebrate the small wins and help them tackle the tricky parts without feeling overwhelmed. Seeing those moments when things finally start to make sense is the best part of what I do.

Now I enjoy getting to use my knowledge base in a different way, helping others grow in their learning.

Writing and Vietnamese

Biography

I’m from Malvern, PA and graduated from Great Valley High School. I’m finishing my Government and English double major degrees at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. I work at the Writing Center at F&M where I tutor writing of all subjects at any stage of the writing process! I’ve also interned at Governor Josh Shapiro’s Office in Harrisburg, PA with Constituent Services.

I love teaching English, and especially writing because of my parents. When they first moved to the US, English was not their first language and life was very difficult for them. I’m inspired every day because of how much they’ve achieved and how they continue to fight through the language barrier. I think the best way to empower anyone is to push them to express themselves how they want to, and learning how to write is one of the best ways to do so!

Katharine

English Specialist

Biography

In 2015 I moved to Wayne, Pennsylvania from Chicago.  One of the hardest parts about moving was leaving my job teaching high school English.  The students, staff, and parents were incredible and I enjoyed every second of it.  I taught reading classes to freshman students who scored below grade level on their entrance exams.  The class aimed to develop reading strategies, advance study skills, and create lifelong readers.  I also taught English, Popular Literature, and Debate to high school freshman and sophomore students.

Why I teach?

I knew I was going to teach from as young as 8 years old.  I remember asking for a chalkboard and a grade book for Christmas instead of the usual toys my friends wanted.  I think even at a young age I wanted to make a difference.  To me, teaching is the best way to make an impact on society as I shape hearts and minds and guide children to grow into creative, engaged, and empowered thinkers.

Fun Facts

  • I skydived over the Swiss Alps.
  • I lived in the United Kingdom for 8 months.
  • The Cubs winning the World Series made my life complete.
  • If I were not a teacher, I would be a yoga instructor.

We have two dogs that love to play and get exercise.

I am always downloading new books on my kindle and reading is definitely my number one hobby!

Why I teach?

I was diagnosed with ADHD late in life and I often think, "What would my life be like if I had this diagnosis earlier?" I didn't have any teachers that "thought" like I did. I felt like I was in my own world and I didn't fit in with my peers, especially when it came to my academics. I want to be that type of brain for my students. Spanish

Biography

I was born in the Santiago, Dominican Republic. My parents migrated to Puerto Rico when I was four years old. Spanish culture has always been a part of my life. My elementary school years were spent in Puerto Rico, and then when I was 13, my parents moved to the Upper West Side in New York City where I continued to immersed in a Spanish community, but now within the continental  United States. These changes helped build my confidence, and have given me the ability to teach the language to others at a comfortable
level for writing, reading and speaking. Even though I graduated with an AS degree in Marketing & Merchandising from the state of Florida, I have found that my Spanish skills have helped me land good jobs throughout my career. I have used my Spanish speaking skills to translate documents and translate
for clients from South America, Europe, and the Caribbean during my 20 years
in the finance world.

Another benefit of knowing Spanish, came when I was living abroad in Italy back in the year 2000. I started teaching private Spanish lesson to the neighborhood family kids for supplemental income. I also did basic
conversational Spanish lectures to students at my two oldest children’s elementary school at Aviano Air Force Base. My three wonderful kids have all benefited from my spanish background within their Spanish class at school. Homework, projects become quite a bit easier with mom there to help. I greatly enjoy mentoring and feel proud for those who want to learn a new language, especially Spanish. It is not easy, and I know that for a fact, since I had to learn English as my second language. I commend parents and students
that wants to introduce the use of a second language into their child’s life. It has many life benefits such as traveling to Spanish countries to broaden cultural awareness, meeting new friends that only speak Spanish, and much
broader job opportunities. It gives me great satisfaction to make a difference in others’ lives by sharing and teaching what I know. I have a passion to transfer conversational skills, words, and songs as a way of learning a new language, especially to those that are eager to learn - whether it is by tutoring, volunteering, in the workforce,
or even just socializing.

I have a positive attitude and a passion to assist and motivate struggling learners. I find, from my own experience, that people learn things differently, and at different paces. When students struggle with a subject, it’s usually because their learning style conflicts with the style or pace with which it is being taught. Tutoring one on one gives the opportunity to learn at the student’s optimal pace, and it allows me to learn different methods to teach that particular student, as well as other students in the future. We are both learning at the same time, the student is learning a language, and I am learning different approaches and skills to become better teacher.

Biography

My name is Sydney. In 2023 I graduated from West Chester University with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education. Since graduating college I have been teaching in a district near home. Prior to college I attended the TE School District in which my past teachers shaped my desires to want to be a teacher. I aim
to be a teacher in which all students want to come to school everyday, and they feel loved and appreciated while there. Any of my students would tell you that we have a Classroom Family in which they all feel loved by not only me, but their peers as well.
I believe students strive on creativity, and group work. Outside of the curriculum I love to see students bring what we are learning to life, and this can be shown through writing, projects, artwork, and so much more!!
I still reside in the TE district with my parents, brothers, 2 dogs, and 2 cats. Although teaching takes up a lot of my time, I love to remember I am still a human being. In my free time I love playing games with my family, watching shows with my mom, hanging out with my friends, and like many people- scrolling on TikTok!
I look forward to meeting all the families that AM tutoring brings, and I am eager to help more students outside my school!
